Vanessa cardui is the most widespread of all butterfly species. It is commonly called the painted lady, or formerly in North America the cosmopolitan butterfly.

Recorded in United Kingdom, Netherlands, France, Switzerland, United States of America, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, Spain, Finland and Denmark (Europe and North America).

Most records fall in California, Arizona, Texas, Oregon, Utah and Nevada.
